They have responsibility for delivery of a wide range of services in their local area with a focus on making cities, towns and countryside attractive places to live, work and invest. These services generally include housing, planning, infrastructure, environmental protection, and the provision of recreation and amenities and community infrastructure. Local authorities also play a key role in supporting economic development and enterprise at a local level.

The mission of Kildare County Council is to make the area the best possible place in which to live, work and do business. To achieve this, the Council is involved in the provision of a broad range of services, such as, housing, management of the public realm, libraries, physical planning and development and community and economic development and the delivery of infrastructure projects such as roads, major parks, libraries, leisure and community facilities. There are also internal services including Finance, IT, HR and Corporate. Regulation takes place in areas including planning enforcement, unfinished housing developments and dangerous buildings to ensure that national and local standards are complied with.

The Council is increasingly exploring new and innovative ways to tackle its challenges and deliver services while meeting citizens’ service expectations, achieving efficiencies and continuing to meet the demand for increased accountability.

There are 40 Elected Members. The Finance Department deals with the short and long-term financing of the Council’s operations, both of revenue and a capital nature. It has a key role in leading and managing an effective and responsive financial service to support service delivery. The Council’s revenue budget for 2024 is €237m, which provides for operational activities and is funded through rates, government grants and service charges. In addition, the three-year Capital Programme 2024 to 2026 amounts to €934m and provides for the delivery of planned infrastructure.
