Wilmington College is seeking applications for the position of Assistant Controller Budget Director. This is a full time, non-exempt position in the Business Services office on the main campus. This position assists in the development and administration of operating and capital budgets; in the preparation of periodic reports and special analyses relating to budget detail, planning and strategy; in the coordination of accounting functions into the general ledger; and with fiscal year end audit.

Duties and Responsibilities: (*Indicates non-essential function)
Participates in planning, reviewing, and preparing annual college budget in detail working with members of the President's Cabinet, area coordinators and department managers for presentation of the budget to the Finance and Audit Committee and the Trustees by the CFO
Analyzes budget expenditure estimates and fund balances continuously. Makes necessary budget adjustments throughout the fiscal year, as well as checking and verifying the accuracy and thoroughness of budgetary accounting records.
Creates and maintains on-line budget review capabilities for appropriate faculty and staff. Works with and advises appropriate staff to resolve issues about budget problems and budgetary controls.
Prepares budget summary and financial schedules, reports, analysis, and interpretation upon request.
Encourages inclusion of new and additional income from opportunities to use assets and personnel to increase earned income.
Works closely with representatives of the various accounting functions (accounts payable, accounts receivable, Bursar, cashiers, donor giving, purchasing, payroll, computer services, and general accounting) to maintain accuracy and completeness of postings to general ledgers and to analyze and interpret fiscal and accounting records to ensure they are accurate and thorough.
Maintains, reviews, reconciles and/or analyzes the following:
Chart of accounts and fiscal accounting tables on computer system
General and subsidiary ledgers
Journal entries for data entry
Federal funds and reporting
Endowment records and portfolio
Fixed assets and depreciation
Investment financial statements, including calculation of Total Return
Manages Staff accountant: and who reviews general accounting matters, is responsible for data input, reconciliation of checking accounts, miscellaneous receivables, monthly closing, and distribution of reports.
Communicates and interacts closely with the campus community to answer various questions related to budget expenditures, revenue, endowments, and restricted gifts and grants.
Assists in the preparation of fiscal year end analysis and audit schedules and has extensive interaction with outside auditors.
Oversees the departmental budget and the General Institution budget lines in cooperation with the Controller.


Bachelor's degree in accounting, plus at least three years of responsible related experience.
Evidence of knowledge of and management experience in a broad range of activities related to accounting and budget planning, preparation and monitoring.
Background in budget development and ability to establish effective internal control and audit procedures.
Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population and to provide budgetary advice and consultation to staff.
Demonstrated organizational ability and ability to utilize technology to effectively complete tasks, i.e., personal computer, calculator, word processing and spreadsheets.
Ability to participate as an effective team member and to lead staff to achieve efficient operations and provide necessary services.
Experience in higher education and/or fund accounting highly desirable.
Experience with Jenzabar/Accounting and Budget Software highly desirable
