The role reports to the Head of Capital.

Role overview

The Capital team is a key part of the Group Balance Sheet Management function. The team focuses on capital management initiatives and investigations within the following areas:
  • Corporate capital structures;
  • Business strategy;
  • Regulatory frameworks;
  • Treasury and ALM transactions,
  • Investment business cases; and
  • Optimal target and policy setting

Role Description / Key Performance Areas

This role's responsibilities will focus on entities within the Old Mutual Africa Regions segment, with selected focus on projects within South African entities:
  • Delivery of projects (measurement to be determined on a project by-project basis, and will include aspects such as buy-in, implementation, timeliness, client and team experience).
  • Optimising, implementation and monitoring of capital management tasks
  • Stakeholder engagement.
  • Deliver on strategic capital projects and investigations; some examples include:
  • Designing and planning capital efficient corporate actions (e.g. dividends, debt issuance);
  • Optimising capital structures across the group and across regulatory frameworks;
  • Setting entity specific group targets in line with internal management frameworks;
  • Analysing commercial aspects of capital investments, and new and existing products;
  • Driving capital initiatives at a legal entity and segment level to meet group targets;
  • Proposing subsidiary remittances and OML dividend.

In the process of these projects, responsibilities will include:
  • Developing suitable capital structures;
  • Quantitative modelling and analysing of key financial/risk metrics;
  • Working with legal and tax to ensure compliance;
  • Facilitating stakeholder dialogue;
  • Negotiating commercial terms;
  • Communicating to senior management.
  • Monitor and engage with subsidiaries on current and future capital positions;
  • Assist the Head of Capital in identifying strategic and commercial opportunities across the Group.
  • Report on capital initiatives to internal and external stakeholders;

Qualifications Required
  • Relevant financial/quantitative degree
  • 5+ years' balance sheet management experience in an insurance entity
  • Actuarial or accounting or CFA qualification is a distinct advantage

Experience required
  • Able to work effectively under pressure, in dynamic situations
  • Track record of high accountability and consistent delivery
  • Highly energetic
  • Able to deliver on concurrent projects.
  • Ability to work independently on projects or tasks, as agreed with Head of Capital.
  • Strong communication skills including an ability to explain complex concepts and key issues effectively with the broader team.
  • Capacity to take accountability for complex and potentially ambiguous pieces of work.
  • Dynamically respond to work requirements and changing situations.
  • Pragmatic, and solution-focussed; able to make trade-offs balancing between deliveries, and risks/costs.
  • Possess a wide range of skills and knowledge, including an accounting, actuarial, quantitative finance, corporate finance, deal planning, regulations and commercial acumen.
  • Proven track record of being able to work efficiently with seniors and subordinates, teams in and out of the organisation, and consultants to ensure delivery.
  • Ability to communicate with various role-players in order to obtain the appropriate level of input, buy-in, and approvals for delivery.
