A standard agency approach for this role would be to tell you that this role is exciting, and amazing and that you’d be working for an inspirational company.
But that wouldn’t really be the right approach, because now and again we see a role where it sits you back in your chair and you think;
It’s not a bad Hmmmmmm, but a “Hmmmmmm, where do we go with this one?”
Because this is a brand-new role in a Client, we’ve worked with exclusively over the past 10 years and we know what works and what doesn’t. But because it’s a brand-new role there are a lot of loose ends, and a lot of “we think it will be like this” and “we think they’ll get involved in that” type wonderings.
This role will be suitable for a person who is agile, flexible and adaptable as, if the truth be told, we don’t know how this will unfold.
But what we do know is that Assistants love working in this firm; they have opportunities for growth, development and involvement that are rarely seen and it’s the type of employer that leans into your skills, ability and talents.
This role has two functions: first and foremost, to support a key figure within the business on a 1:1 basis but also to become a central point in their team - to be the conductor of workload across different people based in different locations, you’ll be the organiser and central focus who will also adopt the role of full-time-whack-a-mole person as the workload can come at you incredibly fast!
We think the ideal person will fall into one of two categories:
You're currently working within a smaller finance organisation and are bored; your role is too limited, too “straight-forward” Diary, Travel and Meetings and you want to roll your sleeves up and get involved;
You’re sat in a bigger finance business and you want to be more than a number, you want your work to get noticed, to make a difference and to have an impact.
Whilst ‘finance’ isn’t critical, given the role, its position and the wider team, we think it will be a big stretch for someone who doesn’t currently work with the type of people that work here (highly academic, number-centric types).
In terms of selection criteria, in our experience, the candidates who have done well within the firm previously (in other Assistant or support roles) have had strong academic backgrounds AND are people who like learning, developing their skills, and growing.
If you have experience working autonomously and independently then that will be a big bonus because we envisage this being really important, so relevant experience that can be discussed at the interview stage will support your progression.
In terms of the day-to-day elements, you’re going to be an expert in understanding the difference between urgent and important and you’re going to be utilised heavily by the individual you support plus liaising with a wide range of colleagues on their behalf - so handling multiple questions from multiple people at the same time will be one of your strengths.
And finally, you’re going to have huge exposure to the founder of the firm; whilst there are many hedge fund founders around the world, there aren’t many as admired, revered, and respected as him.
He is a human dynamo with a penchant for perfectionism and getting stuff done.
