Mission & role of the function

To provide leadership and direction to the UK SSC Accounting and Reporting function.

To develop teams of competent and professional subject matter experts, producing accurate, timely and informative management information for the business. To lead and develop these teams to provide consistent support, business line expertise, and reporting to the wider Heidelberg Materials UK organisation.

To maintain open and transparent lines of communication with all stakeholders.

To develop systems and processes to enhance efficiency and automation where possible.

Key accountabilities

To oversee the SSC Accounting & Reporting department, ensuring all outputs are delivered in a timely and accurate manner, meeting both internal and group reporting requirements, department accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Management Accounting and General Ledger maintenance
  • Fixed asset management
  • Heidelberg Materials UK Standard Reporting requirements
  • Group reporting requirements
  • Internal controls and External audit management
  • Indirect tax compliance
  • Monitor the training needs of the department and offer the necessary challenge and development for the individuals and team.
  • Promote the continuous improvement of all processes within the department to offer as excellent a level of service as possible to all business lines and the group as a whole.

Job dimensions

Scope: All UK business lines (currently 8) and general ledger processes which are agreed to be the responsibility of the Shared Service Centre

Team size: c.27 staff, to include apprentices, trainees, part qualified and qualified accountants.

Job requirements

Finance Competence
  • Excellent accounting skills.
  • Understanding / experience of working to Group deadlines as well as internal guidelines
  • Experience of working with non-financial management and explaining financial concepts advantageous
  • Comfortable dealing with senior management / directors
  • Strong understanding of risk and control processes
  • Ability to recommend and implement change
  • Good knowledge of working practices and chart of accounts
  • Experience of managing a team of accountants of varying degrees of experience / qualification
  • Strong work ethic to achieve tight deadlines
  • Pro-active approach to process improvements
  • Experience of working with SAP
