SUMMARY:

The Controller is responsible for the accounting operations of the organization, to include production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the organization's reported financial results and ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles.  The Controller manages organization-wide finance projects, such as financial system integrations and annual audit and tax filing preparation. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • General Ledger Management: Oversee general ledger activities to ensure the accuracy of all general ledger accounts. Review and approve allocations and transactions; oversee account reconciliations, maintain schedules; perform cost allocations; and review releases of net assets from restriction. Ensure proper internal controls are in place. Manage the month-end closing process to ensure a timely and accurate close. 
  • Accounting Team Leadership: Provide leadership and oversight to accounting team to ensure they are effective and supported. Foster growth and development of team. 
  • Cash Management: Monitor and maintain daily balances on cash accounts to ensure that the organization has the necessary funds to pay vendors, grantees, and staff. Reviews and approves the processing of weekly disbursement batches. 
  • Automated Accounting Systems and Integrations: Oversee effective integration and use of automated accounting systems (including Intacct GL system, Tipalti accounts payable, ClickTime timekeeping and Adaptive reporting tools). Support system integration with other teams such as Fundraising and Grantmaking (Salesforce) and Human Resources (Bamboo HR) to ensure accuracy and reconciliation between functions. 
  • Accounting Financial Reporting: Collaborate with the Director, Finance and Budgets to prepare quarterly financial statements and create tools to present data that is easily understood by staff and the Board to understand the organization’s financial performance. Prepare timely reports and financial analysis to funders, staff, and fiscal sponsorship partners. 
  • Revenue and Projections:  Collaborate with the Director, Finance and Budgets and other senior members of GFW to ensure proper revenue recognition and the appropriate accounting treatment of fundraising appeals and evets. Review revenue projections and provide analysis for budget planning and implementation. 
  • Audit and Tax Preparation: Oversee successful completion of the annual audit and the preparation of audit documentation. Serve as the primary liaison to auditors in the preparation and review of Global Fund for Women’s annual financial statements and during fieldwork to ensure their needs are met. Prepare various tax filings including property and sales tax, state fundraising filings, and support outside accountants in preparation of the IRS Form 990 to ensure compliance.  
  • Compliance: Help create and foster a culture of ethics and compliance within the organization. Revise and disseminate the organization’s accounting policies and assists the Vice President of Finance in monitoring and enforcing them. Conducts or oversees finance policies orientations with new staff and provides ongoing refreshers for staff. Supports the Vice President of Finance with compliance with laws and regulations for other potential foreign activities. 
  • Investment Management: Maintain accurate tracking for endowments and investment accounts.

KEY SKILLS/WAYS OF DOING

  • Minimum 5 years experience with non-profit full-cycle general ledger accounting experience, including AP, AP, reporting, and analysis. 
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP in non-profit environment 
  • Active Certified Public Accountant license 
  • Advanced skills with general ledger accounting systems and other related financial tools 
  • Advanced excel experience 
  • Experience writing and administering relevant policies and procedures 
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting 
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present financial information effectively to Board of Directors, management, non-finance staff and external constituents 
  • Strong management skills, including training, mentoring, managing, and supervising staff  
  • High level of discretion and confidentiality 
  • Excellent knowledge of and experience with accounting software (Intacct and Salesforce preferred) 
  • Preferred public accounting/audit experience

Salary Range of $100,000 - $175,000
