The Director, of Accounting & Financial Reporting provides overall leadership and management of the Accounting & Financial Reporting department. Oversees all aspects of the Port’s accounting functions, including setting strategic direction, legal and regulatory compliance, conformance with industry-prescribed standards, financial reporting, financial systems administration, engagement with internal and outside auditors, and internal controls. Serves in a fiduciary role, working with the Commission and Executive staff to ensure proper fiscal stewardship through the responsible, prudent, and effective management of Port resources and assets.
- You will provide leadership, guidance, and mentoring to a large team of high-performance accounting and financial professionals. Ensure the department’s work is aligned with the Port’s strategic goals and objectives. Support staff growth and development by providing opportunities for job-related training in addition to mandatory training. Provide continuous performance management and employee feedback. Address performance issues and conduct performance evaluations. Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff.
- You will direct all Port accounting and financial reporting activities to ensure public accountability, fiscal transparency, and the timely and accurate recording of more than $10 billion in assets and $1 billion in annual revenues in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and governmental accounting standards. Oversee the preparation of financial reports including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements, and provide reports to the Port Commission and other stakeholders. Monitor and evaluate changes in accounting standards and ensure that the Port remains compliant with all requirements.
- You will establish the vision, strategic direction, and organizational alignment to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of department operations. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and pursue opportunities to enhance operating processes. Oversee the development and management of the department’s budget.
- You will direct the administration of the Port’s enterprise financial and accounting systems along with components of human capital management systems as well as interfaces to many critical operating and external systems. Oversee the monitoring of technology trends and lead the development of strategies focused on leveraging technology to improve Port operational processes and meet its evolving business needs. Oversee ongoing systems maintenance and the management of new system implementations, upgrades, and enhancements.
- You will establish, maintain, and monitor a comprehensive set of internal controls to ensure legal/regulatory compliance and protection against fraud, theft, and misuse of Port assets.
- You will oversee engagements with external financial, legal, regulatory, and other auditors. Collaborate with Port stakeholders to clarify and resolve audit issues and provide guidance to senior staff regarding audit responses.
- You will ensure compliance with all statutes, accounting standards, regulations and Port policies relating to financial activities and use of public funds.
- You will perform other duties as assigned.
Who you are:
- Experienced – You have at least ten (10) years of progressively responsible accounting management and financial systems experience in an organization of comparable size and complexity to the Port. You have at least five (5) years of experience in a senior accounting management role.
- Required – You possess a bachelor's degree in accounting. You’re a certified public accountant.

Extensive experience in implementing, managing, and strategic application of enterprise-wide financial and related systems. Broad knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations applicable to the Port. Knowledge of business/strategic planning and general business management concepts, practices, and principles.
- Leadership – You possess highly effective leadership skills necessary to direct a large and diverse group of high-performing employees.
- Critical Thinking – You have strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. You can apply systems thinking and link departmental goals and initiatives with enterprise strategies and objectives.
- Communication – You have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to garner trust and build strong, credible relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels. You have excellent presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex financial information to non-technical audiences in a variety of public and private settings.
- Conflict Resolution – You have the ability to tolerate ambiguity, resolve conflicts, and manage multiple projects, often with competing priorities under tight deadlines.
What else you need to know:
- Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. You may be required to work any and all assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays. You may be required to work during emergencies.
- Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid remote/in-office setting at Management’s discretion.
- Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington State within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible for telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
